What is Earth Day and why do we celebrate it?
Earth Day is an annual event that celebrates our planet and encourages us to take care of it and its natural resources. It was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 as a way to raise awareness about the environment and has since grown into a global movement with more than 140 countries involved.
People celebrate Earth Day by taking part in events and activities that promote sustainability and conservation. Some of these activities include planting trees, cleaning up parks/beaches, and reducing energy consumption. Apart from this, there are some actionable changes that can be made in our daily lives like bringing our own shopping bags to the store, buying locally and supporting business who are invested in the betterment of the environment. We can take the lessons from one day and turn them into lifestyle 'norms', and quite frankly, that is the point of this day - to not just have one day but rather, a way of life.
There are many reasons why we should celebrate Earth Day. One of the most important is to remind ourselves that we need to take care of our planet if we want it to be around for future generations. Earth Day is also a time to come together and learn about ways we can help preserve our environment.

How has the movement grown over the last 50 years?
The Earth Day movement has grown immensely over the last 50 years. What began with a small gathering in the United States in 1970, has now turned into a worldwide celebration that promotes taking action in order to conserve and improve our precious environment.
People and businesses alike are participating globally in the promotion of this important event. It began as a way to help better understand the earth and its conditions, making us aware just how much we all contribute and are responsible for its wellness. Earth day has evolved to empower millions of people to make an impact for the planet, to show that each one of us can all make a difference if we work together. Small steps lead to giant leaps and we are taking the jump to a brighter tomorrow. Aren't we all just one big family sharing this beautiful place we call home? We are the guardians, for now and for the future.

What are some of the events and activities happening this year?
There are many events and activities happening this year to celebrate Earth Day. Here are some of the most popular ones:
Planting Trees: One of the easiest and most effective ways to celebrate Earth Day is to plant trees. Trees help improve air quality, reduce erosion, and provide habitat for animals. You can plant trees in your backyard, at a local park, or anywhere else you have space. We love growing fruit trees because not only do they provide a food source for us, but they also attract pollinators and birds, restoring the biodiversity of the area.
Cleaning Up Parks/Beaches: Another great way to celebrate Earth Day is to help clean up your local parks and beaches. Picking up litter is a great reason to gather families and groups of friends to do something together for the greater good. This makes the public leisure areas a cleaner and more enjoyable place for everyone.

Reducing Energy Consumption: One of the best ways to help the environment is to reduce your energy consumption. There are many ways to do this, such as turning off lights when you leave a room, unplugging electronics (and their chargers) when they’re not in use, and setting your thermostat to a higher temperature in the summer and a lower temperature in the winter. You can also do so by using a bike to blend your smoothies… (Ya, a bit of a stretch, but it is a thing).

What actions can I take in my daily life to better protect the earth?

Here are just some actions you can start implementing into your routine:

Sustainable Shopping Bags: Don't forget to bring your own bags with you when go out shopping. Also avoid buying fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastic.
Buy Local: Visit your local farmers market to get your fresh foods, supporting organic businesses who are taking the measures to protect our food sources, our personal health, as well as that of the planet.

Zero-Waste Stores: An amazing development in the pursuit of sustainable living. These stores are becoming widespread and are an efficient way to cut plastic and other types of waste from our daily lives. You can bring glass jars/bottles for refilling your favourite shampoos, laundry detergents and more.
Eco-Friendly Products: There is an emergence of green businesses who are not only promoting sustainable items but who are incorporating the aspect of social responsibility into their business models, such as ourselves, Bambuddha. This movement is the future of business. As these organic and sustainable businesses continue to explode, more and more 'already developed' businesses are introducing eco-friendly products to keep up with the demand and shift to doing business differently. Buying eco-friendly products is where it's at!
